I know this is an old song and all, but when I was listening (Love this song, by the way) I noticed the strings tend have a rather abrupt pause between the next one, and I tried extending the length of each of them by 4 (to 132) and thought it sounded a lot smoother.

It’s the name of the Degree (chord, etc). In this case, we are in C major, so F would be the Subdominant.

It’s named afted G, the Dominant. As F is one tone below, it is Sub-Dominant :stuck_out_tongue:

Btw, that chord might be also A-713 (A minor with 7th&13th, e.g A-C-E-G-F, all natural) instead an F9 (F major with 9th, e.g F-A-C-G, all natural)
