One of the better DT Instrumental Sections IMO, which I find funny because I think this is one of their worst songs.

Heh, In my opinion I think it’s one of their best songs… just… not the growling… oh god…

That’s what really kills it.
That and just being a kind of ā€˜Death Metal’ attempt. Definitely not their strong suit. It’s doesn’t work with LaBrie’s vocals.
But to be fair, I’ve become very selective of their albums/songs. Especially the ones released after Octavarium. It’s when they got really corny.
Dark Eternal Night…bleh

I think that ADToE was one of their better later releases.
It seemed that Portnoy’s last two albums really went downhill with his background and lead vocals. He sounded good at times in the earlier releases like in the song War Inside My Head had pretty good background vocals, but like you said, after Octavarium, the songs sounded like they were being too led by Portnoy and were sounding a lot like each other.
It also seems that in the albums with Mangini that they have been missing something, but at the same time have gained something better. The releases began to sound like a ā€˜generic’ DT album after Six Degrees, but after Portnoy left, it seems that they have been able to make changes that make this still sound like Dream Theater, but have enough of musical evolution to sound like something new and never been done before by them.

ā€œA Change of Seasonsā€ was Dream Theater at its best. I’m not really feeling the band’s new music. It’s neither good nor bad to me.

I think I would agree with that 100%.
