Wow this is actually wow.
It’s nice to see something different compared to your more poppy sounding songs.
Here’s some stuff I’d like to say…
Criticisms Part One:
[details=Click to expand]
Part 1 - Sheets 0-0: It’s a nice start, although the violins seem a bit choppy, I don’t know if it will but it might sound better if the notes overlapped each other just a little bit.
Part 2 - Sheets 1-2: The metal guitars sound ok, but the fender sounds strange being that low on the chart. Also, the overlapping and blending drums just sound weird, it should either be changed to a normal sounding roll or just get rid of it. And where the crash cymbals are, there should also be bass drums on them.
Part 3 - Sheets 1-3: Again, sheet 1 should be fixed, and I don’t know if the violins really work out being chords like it is on sheet 3, although it is a decent transition to the next part.[/details]
Criticisms part two:
[details=Click to expand]
Part 1 - Sheets 4-6: Sheet four sounds pretty decent, the drums don’t sound too powerful though as with much of the song. The guitars on sheet 5 and six need more pan balance but it was a good attempt. The metal guitars don’t sound very well when they are on the same pan percentage and made to sound like chords. The metal guitars just don’t sound very well for chords in general unless you use it correctly.
Part 2 - Sheets 7-9: I guess this was a Notessimo death metal attempt? It sound okay it’s just the bass and snare could be a bit louder (it’s okay to overlap instruments to make them louder as long as it’s not overpowering). And it was a good transition to sheet 1 again.
Part 3 - Sheets 1-10: Nice transition to the similar beginning. I think it could do without sheets 2 and the extra sheet 1. It makes it a bit boring and sounding like you needed something to fill in. Same general issues as before.
Part 4 - Sheets 11 - 12: The guitars should probably be an octave higher. It just doesn’t sound right when you have them so low. It could also be better if you combine sheets 11 and 12 together so it doesn’t get too repetitive. Also decent transition.
Part 5 - Sheets 13-14: The vocals just don’t fit well here. It might be just the guitars but it just doesn’t sound right. It’s an ok melody but it could be better. [/details]
Criticisms part 3:
[details=Click to expand]
Part 1 - Sheets 15-17: I guess this is the classic aliens generic chord progression, but it’s a chorus so it pretty much has to sound like it does. Decent enough. Although in the place of the second sheet 15 and sheet 17, it should be something more interesting.
Part 2 - Sheets 18-4: Pretty good change here. Not much to complain about except the guitar chords again.
Part 3 - Sheets 19-20: It’s better than sheets 13 and 14’s vox but it sounds like it’s trying to be bluesy and it just doesn’t fit, again, with the guitars. Guitars should ring out more here.
Part 4 - Sheets 21-23: This chorus is a bit better because it has more to it. Although it should still have something to fill in the second sheet 21. Other than that it’s pretty good.
Part 5 - Sheets 24-26: It’s an okay riff but sheets 24 and 25 shouldn’t repeat. It’s good though. [/details]
I’d probably rate this song 3/5 overall. It’s good but could definitely be improved.
Ok I’m not even going to in depth criticism.
You should never use the same chord progression in a song especially if it sounds like generic pop song chords.
Sheet 52 and 53 are good though so I hope you can keep something good like that, JUST DON’T REPEAT IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN JEEZ.
I have to disagree about the drums in the intro, they’re meant to sound glitchy, & I like how they sound distant. The only thing is that it doesn’t really sound that good with the toms using the overlapping method. Maybe just make them actually sound realistic, but make it tasteful. & The low strat is alright, it’s just kind of background thing. The intro has an experimental vibe & I dig it.
& as for the low guitars in sheet 11-12, I know they normally actually sounds ugly this way but I like how they were used here. The dirty & buzzed kind of works. Probably could add in the guitars and octave higher to see how they sound.
I agree with everything else you said about the rest of the song regarding the composition. I really have kind of a gripe with longer Prog songs that have great bits but them have this changeup that just doesn’t work. Really kills the flow.
I just follow most popular songs ok
I have a LOT of editing to do, my friends.
Good, because this can be like, the best thing you’ve ever done.
exactly, most pop songs use basic and overused chord progressions, that’s why I call them generic.
You are definitely not pulling your punches. knock on wood
