Well, this’ll be tough and I think it’ll be a long critique. Let’s see how it goes. Based off this.
Before starting, a lot of the effects cited are capable in v3.
Pre-Intro [MIA]:
It is missing.
Intro 1 [1-8]:
That bass is shit. Also, there shouldn’t be any brass. Also, there shouldn’t be any cymbals in this part. The main notes have no power. Maybe add distortion guitar? Also, some pitch mods; there’s definitely vibrato there. That last drum fill in m8 should have a low pass filter.
Intro 2 [9-17]:
Same applies here, except I see what you are trying to do with the brass. It doesn’t work, I think.
The guitar tremolo needs to be slower on the longer parts. It’s tempo isn’t constant in this. It shouldn’t end abruptly in m12 either.
The drums should all have a low pass filter and be louder.
Get a better bass pls
The gliss at the end with the guitar is very wrong.
Riff 1 [18-42]:
The guitar chord should pitchbend down.
The synth is good. The drums need toms [on each bass drum], and the cymbal at the start should be louder. Hi-hats need some addition to them.
Bass is still awful.
This part is ruined by the fact that the guitar has no vibrato. Vibrato is done with a pitchbend up and down over time.
Riff 2 [43-61]:
The guitar needs to be louder and panned to the left. The brass panned to the right.
Brass at m50-56 is wrong.
m60 too many guitars on C (2 less). Choose clean guitar here and add extreme fadeout and quiet it down.
Verse 1 [62-81]:
Guitar needs a low pass filter. Vocals need to be MUCH louder.
m70+ guitar needs to have some sustain and fadeout. Sounds wrong otherwise. VERY wrong.
I’d like to mention something very important for this song. Not every note is perfectly in time. The vocals are often on half-beats and quarter-beats (i.e. “interpretation”). However, it is not shown here. Nothing is faded out either, which this part drastically needs.
Intro Revisit [82-98]:
Same problems as before in Intro 1 and 2. Also note how there should be two notes of guitar before m82. This is missing. The drum fills need fadeouts [the sound cuts off early] and they need better volume changes. (For example, the first two notes of the rolls in m83 should be quiet.)
Verse 2 Intro [99-119]:
The synth before 103 needs treble. It has none. Why doesn’t the hihat start softer and get louder? It could make for a better change in sound rather than just two hi hats with the same volume changed at some random point.
The bass should not continue playing. The guitar and bass should fade out at the end of this part.
Vocals are mapped incorrectly here. There should be a harmony above the main line. Otherwise, this is probably the best part of the song (though I would’ve preferred if you had used the actual lyrics like Aliens did but to each his own, amirite).
Verse 2 Transition [120-135]:
Same quips with the vocals.
So this is a serious transition phase, but everything about it is wrong. The drums and bass don’t even crescendo! This is impacting in the original, as it built towards the final moment. And it doesn’t speed up steadily enough either.
Also, wtf is up with the bass? lol. incorrect in so many places and just plain bad sounding.
The guitar is wrong: notes, instrumentation, volume, panning. All wrong.
Riff 2 + Verse 3 [136-166]:
Aliens’ Version here, while incorrect on the grace notes, is a much better example of how to use instrumentation on this part. If you extend my quips with the vocals from Verse 2, this is basically what I think about this part. It’s supposed to be incredibly hard-hitting, faster than the original sections, and powerful in bass. It is none of those things. It is but a shell of what it could be. And why? The bass. It’s just…bad.
Outro [167+]:
You missed a note in 167. It’s a 5th higher than the first and much quieter. You missed a note in 171. It’s the same note in the middle of the measure.
You missed a note in 175. It’s a 5th higher than the first and much quieter. You missed a note in 179. It’s the same note in the middle of the measure.
The drum fills are nice if you like drums without any bass to them.
The final snare fill needs toms. It’s not just snares.
Final Score: 3/10 (Below Average)
Remarks: The lack of a good bass + the lack of distortion guitar + the lack of effects like pitchbending induced vibrato + the lack of proper vocal mapping + the lack of power makes me really dislike this cover. It sounds like a v2 cover, I’ll be honest. I had myself questioning whether this was made in v2 or not.
EDIT: After some changes, the sound of the song is much better. I don’t like deleting critiques as they still serve a purpose in the afterlife.
