Sometime I feel like I’m only a few steps from being as good as you, or only a few music theory rules away from making the sound that you make, but I know its false confidence. I’ll never be able to stand up to songs like this.
seeing as i’ve spent a while on a song im working on I might aswell take a break and critisize this song (note if star finishes his first im going to not read it until im done as to prevent any biased-ness of this review). As for the order im going to critisize this song, I cannot just say
chorus: blahdeblahdeblah
ill have to take a different way and critisize each individual sheet as they play out in order of the song (you said you wanted it more spaced out nuse :L well here you go).
8: just a side comment? what is the point of the random crystal letters that almost spell your name? I feel the start of the song is very typical, introducing the main rhode pattern and the low tumorous violins. I feel you could have put out more time to make the introduction more unique compared to the rest of the song, and while the violin chords at the start are different from the rest of the chords following, it still does not provide a unique feeling to the intro. As for the rhodes I feel that they don’t quit fit with the depressive moody violins. They are a very tricky instrument to get to sound sad and I feel you weren’t able to use them right in this song. As for the violin chords, they are very dissonant which means two things. 1. it can bury the lead instrument under that dissonance and 2. it will be hard to remove the violin chords without making the song feel empty. Lastly I feel like sheet 8 may have lasted two short and feels like its only half a phrase. This can be tricky to some people because it fills up 4 measures so it must be one phrase, but because the song is so slow it only feels like half of a phrase. So be careful of that when you make slow songs.
6: I really feel like that crash cymbal could have been made a better quality, even if you were going for a depressive edge I feel like it could have been jsut as easily pulled off with hi-hat#3. as for the rest of the drums I feel like the simplistic style of drumming really fits this sad song and the speed of this song. I especially like the tricks you did with the hi hats and toms at the end of each phrase. I like the low tambourine and the low crash cymbal except the crash cymbal gets cut off. Oh and last thing about the drumming, It seems lazy when you raise the bass #5 by one note instead of putting it in another layer, even though you can’t hear the difference it just doesn’t seem like the nice clear and clean cut writing that i’ve heard about you. As for the strings #2 I really like how you aren’t following any chord progression and are using strange dark chords. It really adds to the song and takes away from repetitiveness. As for the violin melody I really like how it makes the song seem so much more sad. I think it might be the key you are using (I don’t know THAT much about theory so I couldn’t say). I also feel like strings #1 was a good choice for introducing a melody, a typical choice but a good one.
9:First thing I want to say off the bat is that the violins are now on a chord progression, and what i’d like to change is that iim glad that you made such a long chord progression instead of the standard 4 chord song. As for the rest I see only the piano has been added (a bit lazy but ok). One thing I like about pianos is that they are very flexible. You can make them sound sad, angry, or happy aslong as they are used correctly, and for the most part you used them correctly except there were a few measures that didn’t sound very sad. I like the two parts you have going on between the low piano and the high one, its very entertaining to listen to.
11-12: First thing that I notice is that you removed the violins and you replaced them with the rock organ. There are two things I have to say about this. The thing about dissonance I mentioned earlier applies here. Since the violins weren’t very dissonant and you added a bass it doesn’t make this section sound very empty so I say you pulled it off well. The second thing I have to say is that the organs are a lot quieter than the violins and its harder to make out the chords (I mostly only hear the top note). Also, I don’t like the drumming when the bass drum disappears for about 4 measures (it should be somewhat constant in this standardized way of drumming). As for the rhodes I see that they have taken on the chord progression for the most part, which was very good and pleasant for the repetition, but its pretty hard to hear each individual note of the chord, you mostly only hear the top note. As for the bass I think it fits well in this section, and the part is rather fitting. Now for the lead parts, the choice of instruments are pretty simple but they do great together. I have also noticed that the song is slowly getting less sad, which is fine as long as it doesn’t happen too quick. I am glad that both of the melodies has changed to some extent. Thats all I have to say about these sheets.
29-30: First thing I notice is that you bring back the strings #2 which im fine with because they are different from the strings you had earlier, but in this section everything is not as sad and depressed so I think just the rock organs would have been a good idea. I also think the clarinets were a great idea for this section. The progressive drumming in this section is very good for the buildup of the song, which I particularly like in this section. I am really glad of all of the variants you made for this part, with the chords for the rhodes and the piano. I also like how much you brought out the melody and made it much happier with the ocarina. As for the glockenspiel and the electric keyboard, I they are good for the buildup and reinforce the happy tone that the song is at right now (its more heroic than happy though).
26: this is probably my least favorite sheet because the song was happy one second now its reverted back to this moody depressive state in no time. It seems like the piano’s are a bit more lazier than the previous piano section, with both upper and lower piano octaves playing separate parts, but it does create a good flowing transition to the next section. As for the drums they sound just like a repeat from one of the previous sections. As for the REALLY heavy chords, I think they would have been great for a build up but you already had the large buildup which lead into this section. I don’t think the chords needed to be that heavy (by heavy I mean have that many instruments), and plus the chords are covering up some of the other instruments, IE: the xylophone. Also about 9 measures into this sheet the rhodes are now half notes instead of 16th notes… for some reason I think you just messed up again with that clear writing.
23: this is just a repeat of sheet 9, a bit lazy the only thing new is the piano’s in the chords. Which all they seem to be doing is putting emphasis on the chords, and smoothing out the transition a bit. I also notice that the rhodes became half notes about halfway through this sheet also, Is this intentional? I don’t see what it does to the song. So basically for this sheet make the piano melodies a variant of sheet 9.
35+37: I really like the duet with the violin and the trumpet, its so entertaining and great to listen to, but I don’t like it still because its just 12 with a new trumpet part added over the violin part, and an electric keyboard added which i can barely hear. Nuse I understand the structure that your going for but it would be just 1000X more interesting, bright, and new if you gave the parts variants. As for sheet 37 all I can hear different is the drumming. Im going to be honest I don’t quite know what to say about the clapping, but im glad to see some cymbal action.
20-21: this is just sheet 29 and 30, except with less stuff. You even lessened down the drumming. There (again) were no variants used for the chords or anything. The only thing of interest is the new sitar part, and thats it. You could always change the melody by a few notes or something.
34: holy cow there were A LOT of changes in that transition, im glad you pulled it off. As for this section I see that the chords aren’t as heavy and I like this sheet a lot more than the previous version just for that reason. Nothing much else I can say since its just been repeated from before. except for that transition into the next sheet was very creative and kudos to you.
39-40: I love this sheet because you actually changed the melody. I think you should have done that with all of the repeated sheets (im making this out to be a bigger problem than it is so don’t be too worried about it). Nothing else was really changed except the drumming, which was a great change to listen to.
41-42: I really like these sheets because they have the same melody in the chorus of the song but it sounds like a whole new different section because you removed a lot of things added some things and changed a lot of things. Those vox’s add a great heroic sound to these sheets, and are a great instrument for such a climactic section. The piano’s they are beautiful and have a great part which is why I think they should be brought up next to the melody. As for the violins in the chords I think they blend well with the vox’s and are quiet enough to not stick out and make this section slightly sadder or more depressing. The drumming well, its just repeated from sheet 20 so I cannot say anything about it. The bass is a strange instrument to have in such a heroic sounding section but it does good at bringing out a bass part. The sitar fits well.
44: It is a weird transition from sheet 42 because it goes from heroic to immediately sad again, but the ending was well executed (a bit basic), and satisfies the listener greatly.
So overall on stars scale i’d give the song a 4.27/5.00 and on my scale i’d give it a 3.95/5.00. Now im going to go read star’s review and see how different his view on the song is and then I have to work on the notessimo collab :L. I probably made a crap ton of mistakes so point them out and I might fix them.
Ok so I’ve coloured the things I could fix in yellow, and the things I couldn’t in red, and the rest in blue.
Version 1.5 is coming soon!
8: just a side comment? what is the point of the random crystal letters that almost spell your name?Well I corrupted my name just because I didn’t want that much promotion. I feel the start of the song is very typical, introducing the main rhode pattern and the low tumorous violins. I feel you could have put out more time to make the introduction more unique compared to the rest of the song, Well I don’t want a too-complicated intro. and while the violin chords at the start are different from the rest of the chords following, it still does not provide a unique feeling to the intro.Actually I just copied the chords in sheet 8 from layer 9 in sheet 6. As for the rhodes I feel that they don’t quit fit with the depressive moody violins. They are a very tricky instrument to get to sound sad and I feel you weren’t able to use them right in this song. Well I made their duration longer, maybe that might help. As for the violin chords, they are very dissonant which means two things. 1. it can bury the lead instrument under that dissonance and 2. it will be hard to remove the violin chords without making the song feel empty. I didn’t think they were that dissonant, and I think their ok. Lastly I feel like sheet 8 may have lasted two short and feels like its only half a phrase. This can be tricky to some people because it fills up 4 measures so it must be one phrase, but because the song is so slow it only feels like half of a phrase. So be careful of that when you make slow songs. Well sheet 8 was only meant to be a like an upbeat, or as Star said, an intro to the intro. And yeah it really is half a phrase.
6: I really feel like that crash cymbal could have been made a better quality, even if you were going for a depressive edge I feel like it could have been jsut as easily pulled off with hi-hat#3. I think hi-hat 3 sounds a bit heavy though. as for the rest of the drums I feel like the simplistic style of drumming really fits this sad song and the speed of this song. Well that’s like the only style of drumming I can do. I especially like the tricks you did with the hi hats and toms at the end of each phrase. I like the low tambourine and the low crash cymbal except the crash cymbal gets cut off. Fixed. Oh and last thing about the drumming, It seems lazy when you raise the bass #5 by one note instead of putting it in another layer, even though you can’t hear the difference it just doesn’t seem like the nice clear and clean cut writing that i’ve heard about you. Well I disagree, I think it’s neat having it on say one layer as opposed to spread out across multiple layers. As for the strings #2 I really like how you aren’t following any chord progression and are using strange dark chords. It really adds to the song and takes away from repetitiveness. Yeah, I strayed away from using generic chords and just made up ones on the fly. As for the violin melody I really like how it makes the song seem so much more sad. I think measure 7 and 15 sound good, because I used some kind of appoggiaturas. I think it might be the key you are using (I don’t know THAT much about theory so I couldn’t say). B minor, fyi. I also feel like strings #1 was a good choice for introducing a melody, a typical choice but a good one. I did have piano at first, but it didn’t seem quite right. Violins always make good melodies!
9:First thing I want to say off the bat is that the violins are now on a chord progression, Well it was the same chords that were in sheet 8. and what i’d like to change is that iim glad that you made such a long chord progression instead of the standard 4 chord song. Yes thanks. As for the rest I see only the piano has been added (a bit lazy but ok). One thing I like about pianos is that they are very flexible. Yeah. I always add piano in my songs! You can make them sound sad, angry, or happy aslong as they are used correctly, and for the most part you used them correctly except there were a few measures that didn’t sound very sad. It was a challenge getting the piano to mix with the dissonant chords.I like the two parts you have going on between the low piano and the high one, its very entertaining to listen to. Thanks.
11-12: First thing that I notice is that you removed the violins and you replaced them with the rock organ. There are two things I have to say about this. Yes it is kinda dissonant. The second thing I have to say is that the organs are a lot quieter than the violins and its harder to make out the chords (I mostly only hear the top note). Well I changed them into church organs (like Star suggested). Also, I don’t like the drumming when the bass drum disappears for about 4 measures (it should be somewhat constant in this standardized way of drumming). I added more bass drums. As for the rhodes I see that they have taken on the chord progression for the most part, which was very good and pleasant for the repetition, but its pretty hard to hear each individual note of the chord, you mostly only hear the top note. I removed all the top notes. As for the bass I think it fits well in this section, and the part is rather fitting. 26: this is probably my least favorite sheet because the song was happy one second now its reverted back to this moody depressive state in no time. I rearranged the sheets, hopefully it’s slightly better. It seems like the piano’s are a bit more lazier than the previous piano section, with both upper and lower piano octaves playing separate parts, but it does create a good flowing transition to the next section. I don’t think the chords needed to be that heavy (by heavy I mean have that many instruments), and plus the chords are covering up some of the other instruments, IE: the xylophone. I made those heavy chords as a contrast to sheet 34, but I am removing the piano. Also about 9 measures into this sheet the rhodes are now half notes instead of 16th notes… for some reason I think you just messed up again with that clear writing. I made them all half-notes.
23: this is just a repeat of sheet 9, a bit lazy the only thing new is the piano’s in the chords. Which all they seem to be doing is putting emphasis on the chords, and smoothing out the transition a bit. Yeah. I don’t want to not repeat any sheets. I also notice that the rhodes became half notes about halfway through this sheet also, Is this intentional? I don’t see what it does to the song. Well it happens in every sheet with those rhodes. It was intentional, but lost its purpose now!
Yeah your right. I redid the piano in sheet 37.
Well it is a different melody if you compare it to sheets 29 and 30. I’ve relocated this part.

Thanks a lot! This is surely the longest review I have ever seen.
Yeah, It’s kind of weird how I don’t put you way up there. I actually put you down with us for some reason. Maybe it’s because I’ve known you longer and view you as a friend with awesome talent, not someone with awesome talent who just so happens to be my friend Or not? I don’t know…
