Random Facts

you are freakin’ right

Emus and kangaroos cannot walk backwards, and are on the Australian coat of arms for that reason.

That’s just because you were raised in an english-speaking family. Almost every letter in the English alphabet has more than one sound to it. Homophones and homonyms abound. Compare that to Spanish, where the letters always make the same sound, and the closest things to homophones are papa and pap`a. Plus, English only uses half of the brain, which is why it’s harder for English-speakers to learn a second language.

I know where you live.

Homophones and homonyms don’t make a language difficult alone. Just read through a Wikipedia article on Navajo, ǃXóõ, Ithkuil, Tsez etc.
There are languages with hundreds of sounds different from English, highly complex grammar, etc.

I know English is certainly a difficult language to learn, but I think there are harder.

A goldfish has a memory span of 3 seconds

I’ve read a couple of them. But think: English is a collection of multiple languages smushed together, and came on the scene much later than these languages.

An average adult forgets a thought in 20 seconds. For the average child, it appears to be 2.

I don’t see how that makes English harder.

The odds of one monkey using a modern Apple keyboard to type the sentence “I like pie.” is 1/650190514836423600000.

That’s 650,190,514,836,423,600,000

That’s over 650 QUINTILLION!!!

…so if a monkey types at 11 keystrokes a minute(the # of keys pushed to make the sentence), it would take at most that many tries for it to write that sentence. This does not factor in sleep or restroom or meal breaks.

BTW, the keyboard has 78 keys on it.

EDIT: Okay, fixing this…

so, it’s 11, so it’s (78^77)^11

LOL!!! I calculated it on a calculator, and it’s INFINITY!!!

…well, that’s what it says. I know it’s not infinite, but it’s got to be insanely high.

“it would take at most that many tries” Well actually, If it were to type the same incorrect sentence multiple times, it could take more.

That’s also not including the shift pressing to achieve capitalization of the letter I.

This does not make sense without a timeframe.

650,190,514,836,423,600,000 what exactly?

  1. Then explain how 1/5 or 1/2 makes sense without a time frame. It’s a fraction.

  2. It’s the odds. In percentage it’s 0.0000000000000000000015380107478983791%

So, said monkey from earlier has a 0.0000000000000000000015380107478983791% chance of typing ‘I like pie’ on it’s first try.

A better explanation:

[details=Click to expand]Using my time math from above(11 keystrokes per minute), it would take 650,190,514,836,423,600,000 minutes to get through every possibility.

Or: 10,836,508,580,607,060,000 hours, 451,521,190,858,627,500 days, or 1,237,044,358,516,787.8 years (excludes the extra day in leap years)[/details]

  1. Oh you mean, type the sentence without typing anything else? It was just phrased confusingly.

I forgot the period when I re-wrote the sentence.

That’s also a fact.

The United States Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4th, 1776.

Betcha didn’t know that.
