I posted this in the First songs page and I’m happy with how it turned out, so I’m just gonna put this here…
At least 2 of the following things disallow your song to be featured.
-Too short
-Limited Variation
-It’s Unnamed
-Every drum hit is an eighth (therefor cutting each sound short and showing lack of professionalism)
Okay thats fine. Haven’t brushed up on the rules in a while.
Well these aren’t rules they are just suggestions. I personally thought the eight note snares sounded fine, however the song is short and little variation. It’s extremely good for your first song and my few problems is how the 16th note synths are still eight (9) notes and that sort of killed the sound for my, but I see a future for you definitely.
Well, I went back and completely redone all the problems people had with this song. (Which, lucky for me, wasn’t much )

Haha with my fixed sound I can now hear panning. It sounds a lot better! Tbh though I preferred the original chords like the ones you used in the beginning in here.

As promised, I have taken down Saga of the Dragon now that it has 1000 views (with me being the 1000th ). It’s now the first song of mine to make it into Kd’s archive (don’t worry kd I already put it in for you). Again, I won’t be featuring any more of my own songs and I have another promise to make. Once I release a new song that is completely original and not a collab I will take down A Building Full of Experiments, regardless of whether another mod features my song or not. It may be awhile, but I am currently working on what i consider to be a great masterpiece that I has been an on-and-off project since the August 19, 2010. I am pursuing perfection with it and that’s why I am taking my time on it and not trying to rush, instead waiting for inspiration to hit me when I write.
I want to be honest, I am using an outside program to write it. The reason is that the program I am using seems to have been neglected, meaning it was only able to make techno music and nothing else. However, the interface is much better while keeping a lot of the same values as Notessimo’s, such as putting a new instrument into it’s own layer, and using two of the same number sheets, if you edit one, it edits the other as well. There are three main reasons I use it. One, you have a sampler, which means I have used only Notessimo based sounds, while being able to combine two sounds into one, saving space. The second reason is that you can edit the sounds in the system, the metal guitar can suddenly be used for chords, you set your own loops, meaning there is no annoying clicking sound in Strings #3 if you do it right, and there are filters which get rid of the crackling noise you get in a lot of the woodwind and brass instruments. You can also manipulate a lot, you can flip a cymbal so it becomes a cymbal roll and you can set instruments to have no gain at all or to fade in a little if you like. The third is that once you learn the interface (which seems complicated but is miles ahead of FL Studio), you can do all the things you have to fake in Notessimo, such as slides and echos.
I could ramble a lot more, but I wanted to end on a good note, so instead I have a preview. It’s short, only one minute and thirty seconds, but I plan on having five movements, all of which are loosely connected by short transitions (the end of sheet 28 is this). There are a few discrepancies between this version and the one on the other program, most notably the glockenspiel is switched for a harp that I got from a Mario Paint spin off that specializes in it (I promise it is the only outside instrument I am using currently or plan on using). Don’t feature this, however once I actually finish the song I will both upload it to Youtube (along with a separate analysis) and will probably upload the .wav file directly to Notessimo (us mods can do that lol) inside THIS actual song’s thread, once that happens I will request a feature in a later post.

I don’t really get how you can combine Notessimo and this other program.
That was beyond anything I could aim for … but in my opinion I prefer ABFoE and ASI (and other songs like Industrial Revolution) because they have catchier tunes, but I still loved it as an orchestral piece! (Like you’re a real composer!)
The actual program is called Sunvox, I actually found out about it from Unknowned actually.
I’m just saying it’s easy for me to relate certain parts of the program to Notessimo’s own interface, even though it’s nowhere near as easy to get into. But once you learn the basics, you can use the guide the original maker made to figure out the intricacies. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of huge differences in the two programs. In all likelihood, it will be the only song I ever produce in a different program than Notessimo because it’s going to be odd sharing it here.
I won’t compare it to A Building Full of Experiments, because they are in different genres. The song sounds a TON better in Sonvox because of what I stated earlier, you can tweak everything until it sounds just right. There are a lot of things in the preview that are left out, and a couple things in the preview that were later taken out (such as the glockenspiel). However, I’ve made it a lot farther than just the first movement, the second movement does have a more catchy riff to it.
I have Sunvox. Don’t know how to use it though.

Sheet 3 - The pianos and violins conflicted slightly
Sheet 10 kinda made an unwanted tingly noise in my speaker. I don’t know why.
Sheets 14, 12 + 1 seemed like sudden stops.
Ending could have been more powerful.
Also it just kinda “rambled” on, or something, there were a lot of parts.
It also uses a lot of aug/dim/unusual sounds which are not my favourite. Also sounded kind of dreamy or mystic because of that like in sheet 7.
Also I wonder why it’s called Dragon Wars. It sounds more like a classical song or whatever.
30 - 32 are my favourite measures! I’m in love with those chords. Also I like your drums/rhythm.
You’re one of the best composers here, and this is one of the best orchestrals. Good job!

Okay. After hours of work, here is the final product. Panning is now fixed, I have two Working speakers, and I tweaked some parts.

3-I’m aware of conflict, its meant to be there
10-(I think you meant 11) Fixed! This drove me crazy too, i found out having the low piano in octaves and at 300% caused a terrible sound, and when more parts are added, it sounds even worse.
14-Fixed, well kinda, still a little difficult to show what I hear it should sound like
Ending-More powerful now.
It seemed to “ramble on” as you sated due to a lot of sixteenth notes at 192, it’s a lot to take in.
I use Aug/Dim/Min chords, especially in the backgrounds, to show tension and add more power, agreed, sometimes they do not sound well, like when you hold them out for awhile.
7-I agree, I kind of like it though.
Title-I called it Dragon Wars because of sheets like 8 and 9, they are fast and strong sheets, also the overall feel of fantasy and mystic made me think of a fantasy-like name.
30-32: Ironically, I just threw those chords together rather quickly, I agree though, those are great chords!
I’m not that great of a composer, I just enjoy expressing myself through music and preparing myself for college (Thinking of majoring in music). I also have far too much time on my hands and occasionally put homework off to do this.
Thank you for your review and approval! I rather hear someone tear my song to pieces with all the tiny mistakes I have made then just say, “good job” and leave. I believe any one reviewing and criticizing my work as a way to improve as a musician and a composer.
