Here we go again…
Haven’t heard anything REAL in a while (honestly I hate covers on this site now…just don’t see much point anymore). Mind you, while writing this I have been sick for the past week and a half, kinda sucks right now. Hopefully i can give the kind of review you guys are use to.
Okay starting off I want to stress two huge points. I LOVE this song, and I HATE drumming that isn’t simple. The intro was incredible, the chorus was easy to spot through-out the song and it wasn’t repetitive any more than it should have been…but the drumming just threw me off and was a little over-powering. Normally when going into a song that has Roast’s name on it, I expect something different in the drumming. In the past, Roast has always been able to do things with drums that no of us thought possible without being overly random, but unfortunately I can’t say the same for here. The snare’s sound sloppy, the bass drum is non-existent, and apparently the dry tom is the new high-hat…
That’s not to say that the drumming has no merit. Randomness is always good for fills, which in this song were a little varied on their level of…goodness, which is fine. What cymbal work in general that there was in the song was good. And there was always a snare on the off-beat, which will probably forever be a standard. What threw me off was that the snare is also placed in other places along the beat, which can be okay if not done in excess. It’s just that for the first half of the song, I had it in my mind that the snares weren’t in their usual spots, and even when i realized they were, it didn’t really change my opinion too much.
Okay that’s enough about drumming. The next part I would like to talk about is the bass, often the unsung heros in music. Again, in the beginning it was great…what with the amazing mixture of the clean and damant. Those instruments are actually very obvious choices for bass in my books now, so it was a huge disappointment to me to barely be able to hear any bass in the song, and only bass #4 was in the bass solo, not to mention the rest of the song. In fact I was getting out of sheets 36 and 15 wondering why even though it was the chorus why it sounded so off from the intro when sheet 2 came along as a big reminder. So yeah, the bass could have been better. Overall, I thought it was good, though i may be a little biased there. Little known fact about me: my original username was going to be “BassMasta.” Then I thought it sounded too…newbie. Moving on.
Now the strat work was amazing. Random yet somehow not at the same time, where have we heard this before? Either way, it was great. The solo was interesting and fun to listen to. I also loved the panning. Only thing to critique is the very ending chord of the chorus, it was rather…bad. Other than that, there is nothing else to mention. Once the strings came in, I just fell in love with that chorus. As for the metal guitar work, that was nice because even through it was more of a minor instrument, it wasn’t under-used like in Field of Theories.
The last thing to talk about is the ending, which was very nice and carried a ton of energy. The only problem was that the piano was rather last-minute, and I thought that maybe that second to last chord could have been turned into a triplet to more clearly mark the last chord. Either way it was a great chord.
Now my last statement will be to highlight a great aspect of this song that is somehow underused despite the fact that everyone understands how to do it. No it’s not triplets, but rather staccato notes. For those who have a little less knowledge of music theory, this is the art of ending your notes earlier than the next note. They really were a huge part of this song and I can’t see the song being nearly as good without it.
My vote, as usual, is a four. However I think this song is slightly better than that, I would give it 4.1. Only let downs were the drumming and background atmosphere.
