Shift-ed

So, I just finished playing through Tony Lavelle’s SHIFT series. Upon completion of SHIFT 3 I found my newfound mastery of inversion rather useless. So, I tried my hand at the level editor, which is many degrees more difficult than simply playing through a level, and came up with a real toughie. I call upon any SHIFT masters present to defeat my very frustrating maze.

Good level, Hypo. You were right, that was frustrating indeed. My only complaint is that of nearly every level in Shift, and that is that the hard part is mainly at the beginning. After I finally got past the 2/3 mark, I finished the level in one try. If you want to make it particularly frustrating, then you should put more of the same puzzles/traps up to the end of the level, instead of concentrating them mostly at the beginning of it.

I don’t know if you’ve ever made a level before AFB, but you’re limited to only 5 different key/door triggers and 5 different checkspace triggers (although there is a way to get more out of checkspaces that I wasn’t aware of when I made the level). If I had 10 of each, I could have made it consistently puzzling, but I had to burn through too many at the beginning. So I figured I’d make a somewhat challenging action portion to fill the final third. I personally hate that ground-level, double-spike jump, and I think the last bit before the door is pretty dicey. Again, it’s a whole different game when you’re making the levels; you’ve got to make 100% sure there are no shortcuts at anytime during the puzzle.

Anyways, thanks for the review! Can I expect an infernal labyrinth in response?

My god Hypo, that’s impossible! I lost count of how many times I tried to beat it, but I gave up. I’ll try making a near impossible level later and see if you can solve it.

Nice. That one seemed easier. I could finish it. But it still took me a while!

EDIT: Well, screw me side-ways, there was a shortcut… Jesus Christ they pop up without fail every time. Try the updated code, I think you’ll find the level much less possible this time around. You’ll have to go the long way. It’s amazing what adding a single block can do.

How long did it take you to create this level?

Well, you’ve very nice to ask… this last one probably took 2-3 hours to make and test. Most of that time (at least 60%) was used testing the traps/jumps/shortcuts (still missed one didn’t I?) Hmmm, might actually have been closer to 4 hours, but I wasn’t paying attention to the clock, I was mostly thinking, “How can I block that arrow until they’ve gone past the… hmmm, yes! GENIUS!”

What I need from y’all : Impossible levels, and lots of 'em.

I will try tonight. I can’t right now (I’m at school), but I will try to make one.

I’ve tried a few times and I just can’t come up with anything near-impossible.
