It’s a visual thing. if they just had a placement for sharps and flats (like a spot for the black keys on a piano) then you wouldn’t hear a difference. Because one takes the same spot as an A and the other takes the spot as a B, they look different so your mind tries to hear them different.
(Yeah, I have them too. That’s saying you are warned for not following the rules entirely.)
