As a decendant from brooklyn, New york that currently resides in the most dangerous city in america, Newark, nj, I am compelled to defend Rap to the death.
Sure most rap sucks, like enimen, lil wayne and all those other wannabes, but some of these kids down here can come up with an outstanding rhyme on the spot, I envy them. Its a talent to be able to tell your life story in minutes on rhythm, with rhythm, and be able to rhyme it all and send out some sort of emotion all at the same time, its insane. It takes someone thats quick minded and witty to be able to do that.
Listening to some crappy rap from a mainstream artist= BAAAD
Listening to one of your friends raping about thier dead dad, and a mom in rehab= An experience

Yes. I may not like rap because most of the stuff I accidentally heard is about killing people. But doing it on the spot must be done only if they combine chinese food, bread, bacon, and poetry. Because you told me that little story, I’m starting to look at rap a different way. I’m not going to go listen to eminem or other JUNK, but I won’t be so quick to judge rap as mindless wanking.

To be honest, it seems that a lot of people dismiss all rap as crap without even giving it a chance. I mean, I’m into metal (Metallica, Megadeth, Firewind, Judas Priest etc.) and yet I still listen to rap from time to time. People just think “I like metal/rock so I can’t listen to rap”. They never even listen to it and just think it’s all about pointless rambling because of what SOMEONE ELSE SAID AND A FEW MAINSTREAM SONGS. People need to start basing opinions based on their own experiences, not someone else’s opinions. But, unfortunately, that’ll never happen. Just too many closed-minded people in the world. Also, on the occasion, I just seem to like catchy songs more than ones that require a lot more talent. I mean, I like Right Round by Flo Rida a hell of a lot more than Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd. Both, to me, awesome songs. IMO, Wish You Were Here is just kind of slow, and Right Round is fast paced (My kinda music). People think talent makes a song. If you ever tried playing a song by Metallica on a guitar, you would know it’s just basic chords and penatonic scales followed by some palm muted open notes. Yeah, major talent. But are Master of Puppets, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and Whiplash awesome songs? Yes. So just because a lot of rappers don’t have “talent”, doesn’t mean their sounds are awful.
TL;DR: Give rap a chance. It’s not all terrible, as a lot of closed-minded people seem to think.
